The
peak of Chimborazo is not only the highest of Ecuador but also,
due to the earth's equatorial bulge, the farthest point on the earth's
surface from the center of the earth. This massive mountain was
formed by the remains of two ancient volcanoes and has five summits.
The major peak (6.310 m. / 20.703 f.) is named after the Englishman
Edward Whymper, who was the first man to climb Chimborazo in 1880.
The ascent of Chimborazo is a challenge for the more experienced
and well-acclimatized mountaineers.
Day 1: We leave Riobamba at 10:00 a.m. and drive
for 1 ½ hour until reaching the first refuge, at 4800 m. / 15.749
f. From here we walk for 30 minutes to the Whymper refuge at 5.000
m / 16.405 f. In the afternoon we do some climbing practice in
the snow and then rest for acclimatization.
Day 2: Around midnight we leave the refuge for
the ascent. After 8 - 10 hours of climbing we reach the Whymper
Peak. From the top there are wonderful views of other mountains.
It then takes 5 hours to descend to the refuge. At noon we return
to Riobamba. Arrive at about 1:00 p.m.
