Carihuairazo - the name means ‘mountain of the wind’ - is a beautiful extinct volcano near Chimborazo. The two sharp peaks of this mountain are not difficult to climb and the ascent is recommended for beginners and as acclimatization. The surrounding landscape is very remote and there is no refuge, so we sleep in tents. From the camp we have beautiful views of Chimborazo, the highest mountain of Ecuador.

Day 1 From Riobamba we drive for 2 hours to the foot of the extinct Carihuairazo volcano. Here we make our base camp. In the afternoon we make a short walk on the páramo grasslands and then rest for acclimatization.

Day 2 At 5:00 a.m. we leave the base camp. After about 2 hours of climbing, we reach the glacier and then continue for another 2 hours to the central peak. If the weather is clear, we have a beautiful view of Chimborazo. The descent to the base camp will take about 3 hours. In the afternoon we drive back to Riobamba. Arrive at about 4.00 p.m.

NOTE: This tour can be prolonged by 1 extra day. In this case, on the second day we trek for about 4 hours on the páramo, in order to be better acclimatized so that we can reach the top on the third day.
