On these short jungle treks you will learn all about the unique ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest. Hiking in the jungle we will see medicinal plants and trees, exotical flowers, and colourful butterflies and birds. By dugout canoe we go down a river with rapids, and we swim under waterfalls. We also will learn about the culture of the indigenous inhabitants of the forest.
Day 1. We leave Puyo at 9.00 a.m. by pick-up. After a 1-hour drive we arrive at our small jungle lodge, at the entrance of a rainforest reserve. We take a 4-hour hike in the forest. During the hike the guide tells us about different plants and trees, and we can see butterflies and birds. After a swim under a waterfall we return following a different trail. After lunch we visit an indigenous family to see how they make the ceramics that are used for the traditional chicha-drink. Also we will learn how to use the cerbatana (blowgun). We spend the night in the lodge.
Day 2. After breakfast we start an adventurous 5-hour walk in the jungle. We follow a small stream and part of the hike we will wade through the water until we arrive at a beautiful waterfall, hidden in the rainforest. On the way back we take a different trail, and the guide will explain about the flora and fauna. After lunch we embark a dugout canoe and go down the rapids an amazonian river. We return to the lodge and after dinner we make a nocturnal walk. We can see nocturnal birds and insects, and phosphorescent plants. With some luck we also can see the endangered black cayman.
Day 3. After breakfast we visit a small school in a community. Afterwards we visit a high viewpoint, from where we have a spectacular view of the jungle. We can see the rainforest with its rivers, and with clear weather it is possible to see the mountains Sangay (one of the most active volcanos in Ecuador), el Altar and Tungurahua. By pick-up we drive back to Puyo. Arrival at about 5.00 p.m.
