We leave Riobamba at 9.00. Drive by car to an indigenous community located at 3840 m. / 12.600 ft. altitude, where we start the hike. With clear weather we have a panoramic view of the volcanoes Chimborazo, Altar and Sangay, and the snowcapped mountain Cubillines. We also can see herds of vicuñas (a a protected species of camelid). And with some luck we’ll see the Chimborazo Hillstar, an endemic species of hummingbird.
We hike up to a small Andean mountain forest, at 4200 m. / 13.780 ft. altitude. Here you can see the enchanting Polylepis trees - also known as “paper tree” which is a native species of tree growing at elevations of 4000 m. and higher. There are also many typical paramo plants like the chuquiragua and cacho de venado (deer’s antler). From here we return by car to Riobamba.
Arrival at about 15.30.
