DETAILS

Pick up from your hotel at 7.30 a.m. and drive north to the Cotopaxi province. With clear weather you will enjoy great views of Chimborazo, Carihuairazo and Tungurahua volcanoes. At Latacunga we leave the Panamerican highway and continue on a small road through a valley with views of fields with beans, potatoes and barley, indigenous communities with thatched huts, and women and children herding sheep and llamas. After about 3 hours arrive at Quilotoa, an active volcano that last erupted about 800 years ago. You can either hike a part of the crater rim and enjoy the spectacular views of the emerald lake, or hike down from the rim to the lakeside where you can optionally rent a kayak and paddle around the lake. After a good lunch in one of the lodges near the lake, we return to Latacunga. On the way we visit the gallery of Tigua, with colorful paintings on sheepskin in naïve style, representing rural life, landscapes of the Andes and local legends.
In the late afternoon we return to Latacunga (arrive at 16.00 p.m.) and then on to Riobamba (arrive 18.00 p.m.)
