Arrive at the entrance of the Reserve, where you can spot the vicuñas and learn about the typical vegetation of El Arenal, a desert-like area formed by ancient eruptions of Chimborazo. We continue by car to the Carrel refuge at 4850 m. After a hot coca tea we start the 1-kilometer hike to the Whymper hut at 5060 m. This is not a difficult trail, but due to the thin air you have to hike slowly.
