Departure from Riobamba at 8.30, for about 1 hour we drive through the beautiful and picturesque landscape of the Andean highlands, before we enter the Chimborazo Reserve.
After crossing El Arenal, a desert-like area where you can observe the vicuñas (a kind of lama), we park the car at 4850 m. / 15.912 ft. altitude, near the first refuge. From here you can make the optional hike to the Whymper refuge at 5060 m. / 16.601 ft. altitude, along a well marked trail. After the hike we will start the first downhill section, descending 8 km. on a dirt road from 4850 m. / 15.912 ft. to 4230 m. / 13.878 ft. altitude.
From here we continue by car for about 10 minutes to the starting point of the second bike section (about 46 km.) During the first part of this route you will pass several traditional communities where horses still are a common means of transport. Further on you will enjoy the spectacular landscape with green valleys, giant rock formations and small waterfalls. After a final stretch on a quiet road you will arrive at Ambato (2500 m. / 8202 ft.), capital of the Tungurahua province. From here you can either return with us to Riobamba or continue your trip to Baños, Latacunga or Quito.
Arrive at Riobamba about 17.30
