Mountain Climbing Programs
Click here to see more photos. Photo by Jorge LaraTen summits in the Ecuadorian Andes are over 5000 m. high and covered with eternal snow and ice. Climbing most of these five-thousanders doesn't require technical climbing experience, but you do need to be in very good physical shape and to have acclimatized sufficiently for the high altitude.

The professional guides of the Julio Verne climbing team, who all have many years of experience, will teach you the basics of climbing.

We organize the climbing trips on any day. For 1 single person, the cost is higher than for a group of 2 or more persons. If you travel alone and want to join a group, please check our Notice Board.

ACCLIMATIZATION

Before starting the ascent of any mountain of over 5000 m. you need to acclimatize. Without acclimatization there is a serious risk of getting high altitude sickness. You can reduce this risk if you take your time to let your body adjust to the high altitude.

If you come from sea level, you should spend first a couple of days at the altitude of Quito or Riobamba (2800 m. / 9186 f.) and then make a trek of several days in the highlands (4000 m. / 13.124 f.). After that, most people (but not all) will be ready to climb the five-thousanders. However, if you want to reach the summit of Cotopaxi or Chimborazo, it is recommended to do one of the lower climbs first (Carihuairazo or Iliniza Norte).

We organize tailor-made climbing itineraries including acclimatization treks. If you need any advice about a climbing trip, please contact us.

PROGRAMS

  • Carihuairazo (2 days) Extinct volcano, close to the giant Chimborazo. Recommended as acclimatization trip.
  • Chimborazo (2 days) The highest peak of Ecuador. A long climb that requires a very good acclimatization and fitness.
  • North Iliniza (2 days) The easiest of Ecuador's `Twin Peaks'. It is a rocky mountain and quite easy to climb. Good as acclimatization.
  • South Iliniza (2 days) A challenging mountain with steep ice walls and many crevasses. Requires technical climbing experience.
