Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve
Click here to see more pictures - Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve - Photo by Rokus GroeneveldThe Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, a partly inundated forest in the northeast of Ecuador, is one of the best areas to admire the fauna of the tropical rainforest. The 14 lagoons and the labyrinth of small rivers are the territory of piranhas, river dolphins, caimans and anacondas. In the dense jungle and along the river shores live monkeys, tapirs and pumas. Cuyabeno is a paradise for birdwatchers: there are hundreds of species, such as hummingbirds, parrots and the peculiar hoatzin bird.  Our itineraries start in the town of Lago Agrio.

Day 1  Departure from Lago Agrio at 11.00 a.m. We travel by truck for 2,5 hour to Puerto Gregorio where we start a journey by motorized canoe. We navegate first downstream the Aguarico river and then continue upstream along the Cuyabeno blackwater river. After about 2,5 hours we arrive at the lodge. after dinner our bilingual naturalist guide will tell you about the program for the next days.

Day 2 Starting early in the morning we spend the whole day exploring. We observe the enchanting salt lick ( an exposed clay bank) where colourful parrots and parakeets feed on the clay to draw the toxins from their bodies. During a hike in the forest the native guide shares with us his ancient knowledge learn from his ancestors. He shows us the many different medicinal and practical uses of the rainforest and we learn how all life in the tropical rainforest co-exists in a fragile balance. Back at the Cuyabeno river we have a good chance of seeing the freshwater pink and grey river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis and Sotalia fluviatilis). After dinner, we venture out on a night excursion to search for caimans and nocturnal birds.

Day 3  After breakfast we trek to the Quichua Indian Community where our naturalist guide explains the culture and traditions of the native people from the past to the present. We return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch we leave by canoe and fish for piranhas, enjoying the sceneries and the wildlife of the rainforest.

Day 4  In the early morning we go on a canoe excursion, because the brisk morning hours are the best time to experience the rainforest's activity. After breakfast, we travel by canoe downstream the Cuyabeno River and back along the Aguarico river to Puerto Gregorio, where our truck will take us back to Lago Agrio. Arrival at about 16.00.

ITINERARY 5-DAY TOUR (every Monday)


Day 1  Departure from Lago Agrio at 11.00 a.m. We travel by truck for 2,5 hours to Puerto Gregorio, where we start a journey by motorized canoe. We navegate downstream the Aguario river and then continue along the Cuyabeno Blackwater river. After about 2,5 hours we arrive at the lodge. After dinner our bilingual naturalist guide will tell you about the program for the next days and takes you on an adventurous night walk, where it is possible to view nocturnal animals and giant insects.

From the tower we can observe a variety of species such as toucans, parrots and monkeys. After lunch we paddle by traditional dug-out canoe, enabling us to enjoy the sounds of the jungle, from the smallest insects to the fierce sounding Howler monkeys. We paddle back to our campsite, birdwatching, observing wildlife and being overwhelmed by breathtaking scenery.

ITINERARY 8-DAY TOUR (any day with minimum 5 persons)

Day 1  Departure from Lago Agrio at 11.00 a.m. We travel by truck for 1,5 hour to Chiritza. From here we travel by motorized canoe to the famous lagoons of Cuyabeno. First we travel downstream the Aguarico river and then continue along the Cuyabeno river to our campsite. During the canoe trip, that takes about 4 hours, you have the chance to observe different kinds of monkeys and birds. After dinner our bilingual naturalist guide will tell you about the program for the next days

Day 2  Today we make an early start travelling by motorized canoe downstream the Aguarico river. We get deeper into dense jungle and arrive our second campsite located on Parrots island. After reaching our second campsite we pitch our tents.

Day 3 Starting early in the morning we spend the whole day exploring. The brisk morning hours are the best time to see the rainforest's thriving activity. We take an early morning canoe trip to observe the birds and wildlife. After breakfast we head to our third campsite situated in the Lagartococha area, in remote jungle on the Peruvian border. Before dinner we enjoy a swim in the Delfin Cocha Lake surrounded by breathtaking tropical scenery.

Day 4   In the morning we take a hike in the primary rainforest. Our native guide shares with us his ancient knowledge learnt from his ancestors. He shows us the many different medicinal and practical uses of the rainforest. After lunch, we explore different habitats looking for new species. With some luck we can see the freshwater pink and grey river dolphins (Inia Geoffrensis and Sotalia Fluviatilis). After dinner, we venture out on a night excursion to search for caimans and nocturnal birds.

Day 5  After breakfast our native and naturalist guides take us to a different ecosystem (Terra Firme forest), where they explain the difference between this area and the locations we have observed previously. We return to our campsite for lunch. Later in the afternoon we try our luck at piranha fishing.

Day 6  Early in the morning we travel by motorized canoe upstream the Lagartococha river for bird and wildlife watching. After breakfast we continue along the Lagartococha river until we reach the Aguarico River. In a Quichua community along this river we have our fourth campsite.

Day 7  After breakfast we visit the birdwatching tower. Here above the canopy we have a breathtaking view of the surrounding rainforest. From the tower we can observe a variety of species such as toucans, parrots and monkeys. After lunch we travel by canoe upstream the Cuyabeno River to our next campsite. Along the way we stop to observe the enchanting salt lick (an exposed clay bank) where hundreds of colourful parrots and parakeets feed on the clay to draw the toxins from their bodies. In the late afternoon we relax and enjoy the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 8 After breakfast we travel by canoe down the Cuyabeno River and back along the Aguarico river to Chiritza where our bus will take us to Lago Agrio. Arrival at about 16.00.
